Lampard provides fresh update on Kante injury ahead of Premier League opener at Man Utd

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has provided an update on the fitness of N’Golo Kante, with the midfielder having resumed training as he bids to prove his fitness ahead of the start of the Premier League season.

Kante left Chelsea‘s pre-season tour of Japan early with a knee problem, with the France international having returned to the club’s Cobham training base for treatment.

Lampard has now revealed that the France international has returned to light training, and could return to full training by next week.

“He is training. He has dipped into training with us in the last couple of days,” Lampard said following Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Reading.

“There is a lot more that he needs to do physically, off without us that he can do without any contact which has been good but the signs are good in the last three days that we have been back.

“It was certainly the right decision for him to come back here and get the treatment that he had. I expect him to be training through the week with us to the point that next week he should be fully training.”

Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign at Manchester United on August 11, and Lampard is hopeful that Kante could be fit for the trip to Old Trafford next weekend, although insists he won’t be rushed back.

“That one I will have to assess next week, and see how it is,” Lampard added. “He is a top class player, so however much you want him in, at the same time you have to make sure he is as fit as he can be when he comes back.”
