Lampard calls for ‘urgency’ from shot-shy Chelsea

Frank Lampard admits he understood Chelsea’s lack of goals before his return as interim manager and has called for ‘urgency’ in the club’s attacking game.

Chelsea are without a goal in four consecutive matches in all competitions, having failed to score in fixtures with Aston Villa, Liverpool, Wolves and Real Madrid.

It is the west London side’s longest run without scoring a goal since 1993, while Chelsea have scored just 29 goals from their 30 Premier League games so far this season.

Lampard discussed his side’s issues around goal ahead of this weekend’s clash with Brighton and has called on Chelsea to take a more urgent approach to their attacking play.

“I understood it before I came, trying to address it is our job,” Lampard told his pre-match press conference.

“There has been a lot of talk about belief but the reality is work and replicating it on the training pitch. We need urgency in our attacking game and an idea of how we want to attack.

“In the tight turnaround, you can’t work the players physically when you play three games in six days. It is about the message of how we want to be and play; we need to be more aggressive.

“We need to step up, but that is normal when you are in a period where you’re not where you want to be in terms of performance and results.”
