Klopp ‘very, very pleased’ as Liverpool cruise to 3-1 win over Southampton

Liverpool finished off their last game before the World Cup break with a 3-1 home win over Southampton today.

The Reds got off to a perfect start when Roberto Firmino scored a brilliant flicked header from an Andy Robertson free-kick after just six minutes.

However, Southampton would hit back three minutes later and in similar fashion, this time Saints striker Che Adams glancing home a James Ward-Prowse dead ball delivery.

Liverpool regained the lead on 21 minutes when the increasingly impressive Darwin Nunez volleyed home from close range after a sublime cross/pass from Harvey Elliot.

Summer signing Nunez struck again just before half-time, this time the £85 million man clinically firing home a low Roberston delivery from the left-hand side.

Try as they might Liverpool were unable to add to their goal tally in the second half, with today’s win seeing the Anfield outfit move up to sixth in the Premier League table.

Speaking afterwards Liverpool boss Klopp was delighted his side ended the first half of the season on a winning note.

“Very, very pleased,” Klopp told BBC Sport. ”Three points was the most important thing. The performance in the first half was really good as well. Early goal, early goal then for them but a good reaction. We got in behind and used our speed, used our football skills. Lovely chipped ball from Harvey and a good finish from Darwin.

“Second half wasn’t as good. We needed Alisson. He enjoys that but as a manager I enjoy it much less. We didn’t control the game well enough in the second half. Defensively we were too passive, too deep and that’s how they were able to get through.

“But 22 points was the maximum we could reach before the break, we knew that for a little while and that’s what we’ve got.”
