Klopp questions how Chelsea spending is ‘possible’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he does not understand how Chelsea’s spending is ‘possible’ following the club’s record-breaking investment in January.

Chelsea spent more than £300m on eight new additions during the winter transfer window, including the £88.5m capture of Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donestk and the £106.8m British transfer record arrival of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea’s transfer business continued an astonishing spend since Todd Boehly took ownership of the west Londoners, one which has surpassed the £500m mark since last summer.

Reports this week suggested UEFA’s financial experts have placed Chelsea on their watchlist, with the Blues reportedly ‘in danger’ of breaking FFP rules if they miss out on top four this season.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Wolves this weekend, Klopp admits he is unsure how Chelsea’s spree has been possible.

“I’ll say nothing without my lawyer!” he said while laughing at his pre-match press conference.

“I don’t understand this part of the business, what can you do or not do.It is a big amount; the players are all good players. Congratulations.

“I don’t understand how it is possible, but it is not my job to explain.”

Liverpool will hope to turn around their recent form at Molineux this weekend, having won just one of their last six games in all competitions. Klopp believes there were positive signs of improvement from his side despite an FA Cup exit at Brighton last weekend.

“We want to win games and that felt possible, which is good,” he said.

“It didn’t feel possible in the last game at Brighton. We shouldn’t have lost, but did. We made steps in the right direction but conceded that goal, and the way we did that was not cool.”
