Klopp future ‘under threat’ following Liverpool slump

Jurgen Klopp’s position as Liverpool manager is claimed to be ‘under threat’ following Liverpool’s recent slump, culminating in their 5-2 loss to Real Madrid.

There was renewed optimism going into Tuesday evening’s game following back-to-back wins over Everton and Newcastle, and the Reds rapidly opened up a 2-0 lead over the reigning European champions.

However, they were pegged back to 2-2 before the interval, before a complete and utter capitulation in the second half saw Real Madrid add three unanswered strikes.

Having been challenging at the pinnacle of English and European football for the last five or six years, Liverpool have had a stark drop off this season, currently sitting in eighth in the Premier League, and already out of both domestic cup competitions.

They now look set to drop out of the Champions League at the first knock-out hurdle, the 5-2 loss meaning Liverpool will need to score at least four times in the Bernabeu to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

Now, according to Caught Offside, Jurgen Klopp’s future at the club is ‘under threat’ amid the recent decline. They claim that ‘conversations regarding the manager’s position had already taken place’ prior to Tuesday night’s defeat, with a so-called source reportedly saying that things need ‘freshening up’.

They also claim that Liverpool have already lined up a potential replacement should they decide to part ways with the German, with Klopp’s compatriot Julian Nagelsmann having been ‘earmarked’.

Despite the current struggles at the club, it does perhaps seem premature for Liverpool to be considering the managers’ position considering the stellar work he has done since his appointment in 2015.

The former Dortmund boss steered Liverpool from eighth to regular title challengers, winning the Champions League in 2018/19 and Premier League in 2019/20, while reaching a further two European Cup finals.

Also, Liverpool are only seven points off fourth placed Spurs, having played two games less. It is widely known that Liverpool’s playing squad is in need of a refresh, particularly in midfield, while the Reds’ defence also seemingly needs new additions.
