Arsenal legend Martin Keown has called the current situation surrounding Mesut Ozil as ’embarrassing’.
The German midfielder was once again left out of the matchday squad for Arsenal‘s Europa League tie with BATE Borisov, which they lost 1-0 thanks to a Stanislav Dragun goal.
Ozil did not feature in the 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League over the weekend after complaining of illness, and manager Unai Emery did not want to run the risk of exacerbating it.
Ex-defender Keown has said that between the playmaker’s recurring absence from the side and Aaron Ramsey set to leave on a free this summer, the situation at the club is ‘becoming embarrassing’.
“Is he injured, is he ill? One of the things as a player you have got to be available for selection and you want to give consistency,” said Keown on BT Sport.
“And he hasn’t been able to give either of those, so he has got to work to get back into the team. That is what the manager is asking for and that is what he has to do.
“But it’s actually becoming embarrassing now the Ozil situation, no Ramsey of course as well, and Ramsey not being part of the future is hard to take.”
