King Kenny Dalglish should need no introduction but just in case you’re an NFL fan who’s mistakenly stumbled on this site and are very confused, here’s a quick refresher.
He played just over 200 games for Celtic scoring 112 times, he played 355 times for Liverpool scoring 118 times and racked up 102 caps for Scotland with 30 goals which made him his country’s most capped player and all time top scorer.
As a player he won it all, numerous domestic league and cup titles on both sides of the border and three European cups. As a manager, he wasn’t bad either, leading his beloved Liverpool to three league titles, two FA Cups and a league cup title when he returned for a second stint as manager in 2012. He’s also one of the few managers to have won the Premier League, and he did that with Blackburn Rovers.
A living legend of the game who is as loved for his exploits on the field as much as his connection with the Liverpool fans post-Hillsborough. He has never been one to keep his thoughts to himself and we’ve collected 10 of his best quotes for you to enjoy.
”You always dream of playing for the team you support but the most important thing for me was I just wanted to be a professional footballer. Fortunately I fulfilled my dream. When Rangers don’t take you, it’s not the end of the world. It just means that when you later play against them and score, it makes it a wee bit more special.” – Kenny supported Rangers as a boy but was and is a Celtic legend, the lesson is, don’t cross Kenny.
“The saddest and most beautiful sight I have ever seen.” – On seeing the scarves collected outside Anfield after Hillsborough.
“Glen Johnson has been fantastic in the left-back position in the past three games. I don’t recall anyone going past him except me. And that was during training.” – You never lose it.
“I had to know if I could make it somewhere else. I did not want to go through the rest of my life wondering what might have been without putting myself to the test.” – On finding success at Blackburn
“Nothing really. Most of the time I don’t even know what they are going to do myself.” Talking about what he says to his players before they go out to play, we think he might be lying here…
“They supported Liverpool. Now it is the turn of Liverpool Football Club to support them.” – Post-Hillsborough.
“The people who come to watch us play, who love the team and regard it as part of their lives, would never appreciate Liverpool having a huge balance in the bank. They want every asset we possess to be wearing a red shirt.” – Hard to argue with that.
“Put ‘WE LIED’ on the front page of your newspaper.” – What Kenny said when the editor of The Sun asked what they could do to make up for their coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.
“My league debut for Celtic was in October 1969 when we played Raith Rovers. Bobby Murdoch was sitting beside me and asked if I was nervous. ‘No’ I replied. ‘Well’ he said, ‘you are putting your boots on the wrong feet’. I looked down and he was right.” – He need not have worried.
“You’d be better off talking to my baby. She’s only six weeks old but you’d get more sense from her than him.” – Not even Sir Alex Ferguson was safe from King Kenny.
