Nagelsmann an option for Liverpool and Man United

Julian Nagelsmann is an option for Liverpool and Manchester United as both clubs assess new head coaches.

Nagelsmann is out of contract with the German football association in the summer and has been linked with Liverpool as a potentially more attainable option than Xabi Alonso, as the Reds conduct their search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Alonso remains the standout candidate to take over at Liverpool after impressing in his first senior role at Bayer Leverkusen, though the German side are reluctant to lose the 42-year-old who is leading the club’s pursuit of a first-ever Bundesliga title.

Given the expected resistance from Leverkusen, The Telegraph are reporting that Liverpool have shortlisted Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Nagelsmann as alternatives.

The latter took up a short-term role with the Germany national team in September and will lead his nation at a home European Championship in the summer.

His future after the tournament remains unclear, when his contract will expire and a return to club football is expected.

Nagelsmann has admirers across Europe after forging a reputation as one of the best young coaches on the continent at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, leading the latter to the Champions League semi-finals.

He won the Bundesliga title after a move to Bayern Munich, before being sacked in March 2023 despite a win percentage of 71.4%.

Still just 36, Nagelsmann has also been linked with Manchester United, whose new minority owners INEOS could look for change after an underwhelming campaign under Erik ten Hag.
