Alan Shearer has pleaded with Harry Kane to extend his contract with Bayern Munich rather than return to the Premier League and break his goal-scoring record.
No player has come close to beating the Newcastle United legend’s record of 260 goals in the English top-flight, which has stood for 20 years and counting.
Kane was on track to eventually overtake Shearer before leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Bayern on a four-year deal in 2023, leaving him on 213 goals.
The move has been hugely successful for the England captain, who has scored 156 goals in 160 appearances, won the first major trophies of his career and picked up this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or award.
It was thought that Kane might return to Spurs after his spell in Germany to break Shearer’s record, but it appears he will be staying there beyond next summer when his current deal runs out.
Reports claim that the 33-year-old is on the cusp of signing a new contract that will extend his stay at Bayern until 2029, which will relieve Shearer.
Alan Shearer urges Harry Kane to sign new Bayern Munich deal
“Congratulations on winning the Ballon d’Or, Harry,” Shearer told Kane on Amazon Prime Video. “Really, really well done. So what’s the next big prize you want to win in your career? Please don’t tell me it’s the Premier League record. Sign that extension in Bayern. Cheers!”
Kane confirmed that he is “extremely close” to putting pen to paper on fresh terms with Bayern ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
“There have been conversations over this weekend and today as well. I know I keep saying but we are extremely close now.
“The details are the details in every contract. A lot of the bigger stuff has been ironed out and we are happy with.
“But in every contract there are loads of little things that go into it and small details that the lawyers have to thrash out and figure out.
“All I all I would say is that it’s more days, than weeks.
“From what I’ve heard the conversations have gone well again today, and hopefully we will be in place to do something in the next few weeks.”
