Chelsea maintained their perfect start to this Premier League campaign by beating Newcastle 2-1 at St.James Park today.
It was far from easy for Maurizio Sarri’s men however, who for all their tidy passing, really struggled to break down Rafa Benitez’s superbly well organised Geordie defence.
The game seemed to be heading for a goalless draw until Chelsea talisman Eden Hazard was given the chance to put the Blues ahead in the 76th minute after left-back Marcos Alonso was controversially adjudged to have been fouled in the area by Fabian Schar.
However, Newcastle struck back from a superb Joselu header in the 83rd minute to set up a dramatic finish.
Then with just three minutes of normal time left Alonso was involved again as his volley was nudged into his own net by the unlucky DeAndre Yedlin.
Speaking after the game Hazard hailed his sides desire to take all three points, with the Belgium international reckoning that most other sides would have been happy with a point after being pegged back late on.
“Everyone was thinking to draw when they scored but we are Chelsea and we never give up.’’ Hazard told the BBC.
“We did well, created a lot of chances and we deserved to win. I feel tired tonight, but the whole team is tired but we have the points.”
Chelsea’s third successive win of the season sees them go joint top of the Premier League with Liverpool and Watford.
