Haaland injury concern ahead of Liverpool trip

Erling Haaland raised injury concerns after limping off during Norway’s 2-1 Nations League defeat by Portugal, leaving Manchester City waiting for an update ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

Erling Haaland raised injury concerns after limping off during Norway’s 2-1 Nations League defeat by Portugal, leaving Manchester City waiting for an update ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The City striker signalled towards the bench before being replaced by Jørgen Strand Larsen in the 67th minute of the Group A4 encounter. Haaland had gone close earlier but dragged an effort wide.

The 26-year-old has scored seven goals for City this season, making his fitness particularly important with Enzo Maresca’s side facing a difficult Premier League fixture at Anfield.

Norway took the lead through Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer, who controlled Martin Ødegaard’s cross before striking a superb half-volley into the top corner from outside the box.

Portugal responded almost immediately when João Cancelo fired in an impressive effort from a similar distance after Nuno Mendes’ long throw.

Gonçalo Ramos completed the comeback with 11 minutes remaining, finishing from close range after a lay-off from João Félix to secure Portugal’s fourth straight win in the competition.

Portugal were reduced to 10 men late on when Francisco Conceição received two bookings for dissent, but they held on to strengthen their position at the top of the group.

The result leaves Portugal six points clear of second-placed Denmark with two matches remaining, while Norway sit bottom after suffering a third consecutive Nations League defeat.

For City, however, the immediate concern will be Haaland’s condition. The striker is due to return to club duty before a crucial trip to Liverpool, which will be City’s first match since the club were found guilty of serious Premier League financial-rule breaches. City have appealed the verdict.
