Guardiola: Rodri has to play better

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says new signing Rodri must ‘play better’.

The Spanish international arrived in a club-record £62.8m deal from Atletico Madrid this summer, with the 23-year-old having started the Community Shield win over Liverpool and Saturday’s Premier League opener at West Ham.

The midfielder has largely impressed in his opening appearances in a City shirt, though with Fernandinho fit again, Guardiola has called on Rodri and the rest of his squad to improve as they bid for further success this season.

“Rodrigo has to play better, so does everyone,” Guardiola said.

“He has potential as a young player, he’s tall, but he’s new. We have to see what we can do better.

“He’s smart and he will get it. Like everyone, he can do better.

“Everybody is fit including Fernandinho. Everybody deserves to play because the quality of the team is really good.

“We can talk about the line-ups but we have to think about what is best for the team and how to beat our opponent.”
