Pep Guardiola has hinted at summer sales for Manchester City’s out of favour stars and says the club will ‘decide the best for the players’.
City have enjoyed an excellent season to be crowned as Premier League winners for the third time in just four campaigns, whilst the Champions League could yet follow in a historic treble after also lifting a fourth consecutive Carabao Cup.
The club’s success has come amid a wealth of talent at the Etihad, though the vast competition for places has seen several notable names sidelined for much of the season.
Aymeric Laporte has made just 14 league starts this season following John Stones’ renaissance and the summer signing of Ruben Dias, whilst Raheem Sterling has also seen his minutes decrease with the England international featuring for just 10 minutes across the club’s Champions League quarter-final and semi-final ties.
Sergio Aguero is a confirmed summer departure at the end of his contract and Eric Garcia is also set to leave on a free transfer, though Guardiola says there could be further exits for players unhappy at a lack of regular first-team football.
“There are players that accept one typical situation in the team and there are other ones that don’t accept it,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s trip to Brighton tonight.
“When they don’t accept sometimes not playing, you can sustain that for one season – a short period – but not for a long period. It’s impossible.
“In that position, we have to change. We’ll see at the end of the season. We’ll talk with them and we’ll be clear, they’ll be clear, and we’ll decide the best for the players.”
