Germany legend Matthaus urges Upamecano to stay at Leipzig amid PL interest

Lothar Matthaus has urged Dayot Upamecano to ignore interest from the Premier League and continue his development with RB Leipzig next season.

Upamecano is said to be attracting interest from several of Europe’s leading clubs following another impressive season with the Bundesliga side, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all having been linked with the 21-year-old ahead of a potential summer move.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the youngster, though former Bayern and Germany legend Matthaus has warned Upamecano not to rush into a big-money transfer to one of Europe’s elite.

“I can see him playing for all the big clubs when he gets more experience,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“He’s a young player, highly rated, fast, has a good positional game and uses his body well for a 21-year-old. But a year or two in Leipzig would not hurt him.

“Leipzig are a top team – one of the last eight remaining in the Champions League.

“I can still see one or two per cent where he can learn, but he’s a huge player and that’s why I’m not surprised that top clubs in Europe are after him.”
