Gary Cahill has completed a free transfer to Crystal Palace and has cited Roy Hodgson as a major factor in his decision.
The former England international became a free agent this summer following the expiry of his Chelsea contract and has since been linked with a whole host of Premier League clubs.
The 33-year-old has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Burnley in recent weeks but has opted for a move to South London to join Roy Hodgson’s side.
“I worked with Roy and liked it very much, along with Ray [Lewington] as well,” Cahill told cpfc.co.uk.
“They’re fantastic football people and I enjoyed my time with them and that was another thing that factored into the decision [of joining the Eagles] and to work with those two guys again is exciting.”
Cahill also revealed that he spoke to Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, with the 23-year-old having ‘loved’ the time he spent with the Eagles, following his season on loan at Selhurst Park in 2017/18.
“He loved it here and I thought he benefitted Ruben is a special player, he’s going to have a fantastic future and I thought he was great in the games he played for Palace. He spoke very highly of not only the team and the fans but the behind the scenes too.”
Despite edging towards the end of his playing days, Cahill believes he still has plenty to offer in the Premier League.
“I’m hungry to keep playing – prolonging my career for as long as I can. I feel in great shape and when I play whoever that has been for – England, Chelsea, Bolton – whoever I play for I like to think I give 110% and leave it all out there. Hopefully that will be good enough for the manager, my team-mates and the fans.”
