Former Liverpool star praises Gerrard for taking on Rangers challenge

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has praised Steven Gerrard for taking on the challenge of becoming Rangers’ latest manager.

Gerrard, who has no previous management experience in senior football, has been handed the managers job at Ibrox, taking over at one of Scotland’s most famous, historic and successful clubs.

With Rangers’ financial troubles having being well documented, and Celtic’s incredible domination in recent years, it is certainly a brave decision from the Gers board to take on an untested manager.

Gerrard has of course been working as a youth team manager at Liverpool, guiding the U18 side to the Champions League quarter finals, but former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has also praised Gerrard for taking a huge leap out of his comfort zone:

“Celtic have a brilliant manager in Brendan Rodgers and the resources to improve a team who have won seven back-to-back titles,” Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail.

“Gerrard’s easy option would have been to stay at Liverpool where everything is set up for him to develop his coaching career.”

He added: “Even from his earliest days at Anfield, the Stevie I played with was a leader, a fighter. He has all the qualities to become a great manager and will back himself to make a success of this job.

“To have a player who was one of the world’s best midfielders leading Rangers is the best thing that could have happened to Scottish football.

“Of course it will be difficult for Stevie but I don’t think anyone can criticise him for taking this bold step. I applaud him for making such a brave move.”

While Redknapp is full of praise for the former Liverpool and England captain, he doesn’t always talk the most sense in his role as a pundit. Check out 10 of Jamie Redknapp’s most stupid quotes.
