Five defenders named as Man Utd set to ‘prioritise’ centre back signing

Manchester United are set to ‘prioritise’ the signing of a new centre-back this summer with five defenders having been named as potential transfer targets.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to secure the signing of a centre-back this summer as the Red Devils look to improve on their defensive record, having conceded more goals than any other side in the top half with the exception of 10th-placed Leeds.

Harry Maguire has been an ever-present since signing from Leicester in a world-record deal in 2019, though finding a suitable partner has proven difficult with Victor Lindelof unconvincing and Eric Bailly’s continued struggles with fitness.

According to ESPN, United’s recruitment team are currently finalising their targets with Solskjaer having been ‘promised’ money to spend even with the club taking a cautious financial approach in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

Raphael Varane headlines the list of names linked with a move to the Premier League with recent reports having suggested the defender could be open to leaving Real Madrid, the Spanish giants understood to be willing to listen to offers for the 27-year-old this summer should he fail to agree a new contract.

Sevilla’s highly-rated youngster Jules Kounde and Benfica’s David Carmo have also been suggested as targets, alongside Aston Villa’s England international Tyrone Mings.

United are also amongst the club’s interested in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano whose €42m release clause will become active this summer, though Bayern Munich remain favourites to sign the 22-year-old ahead of Premier League interest.
