Olivier Giroud says he is ‘excited’ ahead of Frank Lampard’s reign as Chelsea manager, saying the 41-year-old is the ‘right person’ to lead the club forward.
Blues legend Lampard, the club’s all-time record goalscorer, returned to Stamford Bridge as Maurizio Sarri’s successor having impressed by leading Derby County to the Championship play-off final in his first season in management.
Chelsea forward Giroud, who netted twice in the 4-0 win over St Patricks at the weekend, says Lampard’s appointment has created excitement amongst the squad, praising the former England international’s ‘energy and desire’.
“I like his energy and desire to always improve and win,” Giroud told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.
“We’ve been training very hard with high intensity.”
Despite the new Chelsea boss’ lack of managerial experience, Giroud says he believes the club have made the right appointment in bringing Lampard back to West London.
“I think he [Lampard] is the right person. He is basically a Chelsea legend,” added Giroud.
“We all believe in his quality to improve the team and with the transfer ban it’s a good opportunity for the young players to show what they can do.
“Now we’re excited to play the first league game.”
With Alvaro Morata completing a permanent move to Atletico Madrid, and Gonzalo Higuain returning to Juventus, Giroud is aiming to become the clubs first choice striker, battling with Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham for a starting berth.
