Eddie Howe sends transfer warning to Newcastle owners ahead of January

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has warned the club’s owners that the squad is in danger of becoming stale ahead of the January transfer window.ย

The Magpies have spent over half a billion pounds on players since Saudi-Arabia’s Public Investment Fund took over the club in 2021, but have kept their powder dry in the last two windows.

Lewis Hall was the biggest signing of the summer for ยฃ28m, but that was part of an obligation-to-buy deal after the defender spent last season on loan at St James’ Park from Chelsea.

Newcastle also sold two promising youngsters in Elliott Anderson and Yankubah Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively.

Howe emphasised the need for new signings when the transfer window re-opens next month.

“I think freshness is important in a squad, I won’t sit here and deny that,” he said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s meeting with Liverpool in the Premier League.

“There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep the group dynamic new. A new dynamic and a new team always has to form every season.

“Sometimes the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product, so I think we’re aware of that. But it’s about what we’re able to do rather than, ‘I want’. What I want is clear. It’s what we’re able to do that is the key thing.”

Newcastle United are 11th in the Premier League table with 19 points after 13 games.
