The earliest title wins in Premier League history

Liverpool have won the Premier League title with four games to spare following a comprehensive 5-1 win over Spur at Anfield.ย

It’s been an incredible campaign from the Reds, with Arne Slot guiding Liverpool to top-flight success in his debut campaign. The Dutchman is just the sixth manager to win the Premier League title in their first season with the club.

Liverpool have led the table from almost start to finish and sealed success with a month of the campaign still to go. Following that achievement, we’ve looked at the earliest title wins in Premier League history, by both date and games remaining.

Earliest Premier League title wins by date

  • 14 April โ€“ Manchester United (2001)
  • 15 April โ€“ Manchester City (2018)
  • 22 April โ€“ Manchester United (2000, 2013)
  • 25 April โ€“ Arsenal (2004)

Liverpool’s coronation has come before the final month of the campaign but it’s still some way from the earliest in Premier League history.

That honour belongs to Manchester United, who clinched the championship on April 14th during the 2000/01 season. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lifted a third consecutive title after beating Coventry City 4-2 at Old Trafford, with Dwight Yorke on target twice. Such was their dominance, the Red Devils won the title with five games to spare. United ended the campaign 10 points clear of Arsenal, despite losing each of their last three games as the champions took their foot off the gas.

It’s the earliest date a title has ever been wrapped up, a day earlier than Manchester City’s 2017/18 ‘Centurions’ side.

Liverpool hold the record for the earliest ever title win after lifting the 2019/20 Premier League with seven games to spare. The Reds raced out of the traps to put together the best ever start to a season in one of Europe’s top five leagues. Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded 26 wins and one draw from their opening 27 games to open up an unassailable lead.

Incredibly, Liverpool’s title success was the earliest triumph in terms of games to spare and the latest in terms of date. Their title was confirmed on June 25th, after the Premier League season was paused on March in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The season eventually resumed behind closed doors with Liverpool clinching a first top-flight crown in 30 years.
