Dyche bemoans ‘same old’ Everton problems in Man Utd defeat

Everton boss Sean Dyche says his side “can’t rely on luck” as they failed to finish their chances against Manchester United  in the Premier League on Saturday.

Alejandro Garnacho was fouled twice in the box in the first half to win a pair of penalties for the Red Devils, which were converted by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford respectively.

The Toffees had the majority of the chances at Old Trafford, taking 23 shots to Man United’s 15, but could not find the net on a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

“Same old, same old unfortunately in recent weeks,” Dyche lamented to BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle, although the former Burnley manager was nonetheless pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“We have to maintain our consistency which we are doing. But the moment of truth is so important but currently we’re not finding that.

“We had the 10 points taken away, Manchester United beat us then (in November), and I thought it was an unjust win for them, similar today. We’ve done everything right, we just haven’t found the goal.

“After the 10 points people forget that we won four on the trot and were scoring goals freely, so it’s there. We get into some incredible moments and areas. It’s hard to explain, sometimes you have to get hurt to score a goal. It doesn’t have to be a clean goal, you’ve got to get hurt to score a goal. At the moment there is a little bit of waiting for the perfect moment.

“There were chances today where we just needed that extra inch, extra yard, that extra fight and desire to score that goal. That’s the moment that’s waning.”

Dyche continued: “Luck gets you nothing. Now and then you can rely on luck, but you can’t rely on luck over a season. It’s consistency. We are doing the right things consistently.

“If you take the goals out, that was a very good performance, especially away here. I’ve never had that many chances away here. I think we had 45 clean entries into the box today, they had 15. They are heavy stats. There is a lot right, but there’s no point worrying about that when you see the scoreline at the end.

“We shot ourselves in the foot with the penalties.”
