Dowman double sees Arsenal teenager match Wayne Rooney record

Max Dowman starred as Arsenal booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 win at Ipswich Town.

Max Dowman starred as Arsenal booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 win at Ipswich Town.

The teenager scored twice on his first start of the season as the Gunners eased to success at Portman Road. Dowman has not featured in the Premier League so far this season, but improved his chances of more minutes with a reminder of his quality.

His double was his first in senior football and means the Arsenal academy product became only the second 16-year-old ever to score twice for a Premier League side.

Dowman’s double saw him match the achievement of Wayne Rooney, who scored twice for Everton in a 3-0 win over Wrexham in the League Cup in October 2002.

It’s another record feat for Dowman, who last season became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. He set a new record, scoring against Everton at 16 years and 73 days.

He became the youngest player to win the Premier League at 16 years and 139 days old after Arsenal won the title.
