DONE DEAL: Benitez secures first Newcastle United signing

Newcastle United have completed their first signing of the Rafael Benitez era after securing a £4.5million transfer of Gent goalkeeper Matz Sels.

The Belgium Under-21 international joins the club after signing a five-year contract at St James Park, and will most likely start the season as the clubs number one goalkeeper. That may be on a temporary or permanent basis, with current number one ‘keeper Tim Krul having been linked with a move to Everton this summer.

Sels said:

I’m very pleased – I’m very happy to be here, in Belgium, Newcastle is a really big club, and that’s why I chose Newcastle.

As soon as Newcastle showed their interest in me, and I spoke to the coach, Rafa Benitez, it was an easy decision to make.

The 24-year old turned down a move to Premier League newcomers, and Newcastle rivals, Middlesbrough. He made 48 appearances for Gent last season, keeping 15 clean sheets on their way to finishing second in the Belgian Pro League.
