Palmer a ‘shining light’ for Chelsea as Lampard and Shearer gush over star

Cole Palmer received high praise from Premier League legends Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer amid a breakout season for Chelsea.

The attacking midfielder has proved himself to be the signing of the season, scoring 20 goals in the top flight after leaving Manchester City in the summer for £40 million.

Palmer was on the losing side on Saturday as his former club reached the FA Cup final for a second successive year following a late Bernardo Silva goal at Wembley.

Despite the defeat, Lampard felt the 21-year-old showed his worth in the semi-final, backing the player to enjoy a great career for club and country.

“Cole Palmer came into a club that is in a difficult moment,” the ex-Chelsea midfielder told BBC One. “Maybe it has worked well for him as it has made him stand out, but it is not easy to arrive with such confidence and quiet arrogance.

“Today is another box ticked for him. Wembley, high pressure, against Man City, can you perform again at the high level? And he has just done it.

“The fact he has hit the ground running so quickly is amazing and there is no telling how far he can go for Chelsea and England.”

Shearer lavished more praise on Palmer and felt the outcome of Saturday’s semi-final would have been if he had gotten on the end of some of Chelsea’s chances during the game.

“Cole Palmer is the shining light of this Chelsea team, the heartbeat of the side. Everything good that happens, he is involved in it,” the former Newcastle United and England striker said.

“His technique, his attitude, his ability to find and execute a pass at the right time.

“Mauricio Pochettino would have been desperate for one of those big, big chances to have fallen to Palmer rather than Nicolas Jackson because the outcome would have been different.

“He just couldn’t find himself in those dangerous positions to get in on goal himself. He is here to stay, a top quality player.”
