Waddle backs Harry Maguire for move abroad after ‘ridiculous’ criticism

Chris Waddle has backed Harry Maguire to move abroad and continue his career after the ‘ridiculous’ criticism the England defender has received.

Maguire scored an own goal during England’s 3-1 friendly win over Scotland on Tuesday evening, having been introduced as a half-time substitute at Hampden Park.

The centre-back was mocked by the home crowd to continue a difficult period for the defender, who lost his position as Manchester United captain during the summer.

Maguire has featured for just 23 minutes in the Premier League this season and former England winger Waddle believes the 30-year-old should have sought a summer move abroad, amid the ‘ridiculous’ criticism he continues to receive.

“Give him credit, I didn’t see him give the ball away, the own goal was the only thing he did wrong,” Waddle said to BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He should’ve gone abroad and got a move. If he had gone to Italy he could pass the ball out from the back – we know he lacks a bit of pace.

“It would’ve been ideal to go abroad and play football for a year then when he comes back to England he would get half [of the criticism] he gets now and it’s ridiculous what [criticism] he gets now.”
