Chelsea on verge of completing Mendy transfer as 'keeper travels to London for medical

Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, as the Senegal international heads to London for a medical.

The 28-year-old is set to sign for the Blues having emerged as one of Ligue 1’s best between the sticks and will provide some much-needed competition to current options Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero.

Despite arriving at the club in 2018 for a club-record fee, Blues number 1 Kepa has underwhelmed during his time in the Premier League, with manager Frank Lampard dropping the £71 million ‘keeper toward the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Blues had hoped that young Spaniard Kepa would be the club’s first-choice stopper for the foreseeable future, though he has done little to convince anyone that he is up to the task – recording one of the worst save percentage records in the entire division last season, as Chelsea recorded the worst defensive record in the entire top half of the league.

With Lampard having seemingly run out of patience with the former Athletic Bilbao man, the club have acted quickly to bring in some stern competition – or even a replacement – Sky Sports reporting that the Mendy deal is now on the verge of being completed.

The acquisition of Mendy means another high-profile arrival in a summer that has seen Chelsea already make six major signings, as they look to close the gap on the league’s dominant top two of Manchester City and Liverpool.

The club’s ongoing spending spree is in stark contrast to last summer in which an enforced transfer ban left new manager Lampard unable to bring in any new additions, while he also had to cope with the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. Fortunately for the former England international, he was able to call upon a wealth of young talent as the Blues went on to secure Champions League football as well as reaching the FA Cup final.

However, the arrival of such exciting talent so far this window has given the squad an almighty boost and will no doubt raise expectations ahead of the upcoming campaign, particularly with West Ham’s Declan Rice also potentially still to be added in the coming weeks.
