Alternative to Haaland? Chelsea ‘monitoring’ Man City striker Aguero

Chelsea are reportedly ‘monitoring’ Sergio Aguero’s situation at Manchester City with the club considering a shock move for the forward.

Aguero has entered the final months of his contract at the Etihad and there have been few signs of an extension, the club’s all-time record goalscorer seemingly set to depart on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.

The Argentina international has scored 257 goals in all competitions since signing for Man City from Atletico Madrid in 2011, though has seen his 2020/21 season disrupted by injury and illness, scoring just once in the Premier League.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with a move for the 32-year-old on a free transfer, though the Mail are reporting that Chelsea have emerged as shock contenders to secure his signing.

Chelsea are keen to strengthen their centre-forward options during the summer and have been linked with a move for Erling Haaland, though are considering alternatives given the huge cost and competition to sign the Borussia Dortmund star.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are all understood to hold an interest in the Norway international, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus also linked.

Aguero could provide a short-term solution for Thomas Tuchel’s side, with Olivier Giroud out of contract at the end of the current campaign and Timo Werner having endured a difficult debut season at Stamford Bridge.

According to the report, Aguero is open to staying in the Premier League, opening up the prospect of the forward joining a direct competitor after a decade of huge success at the Etihad.
