Chelsea are the favourites to secure the signing of Kai Havertz with several interested clubs unable to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s £90m valuation of the highly-rated midfielder.
Havertz has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in world football and has enjoyed another impressive season in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, scoring 12 league goals and providing a further six assists to attract the attention of Europe’s elite.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are amongst the clubs to have expressed an interest in signing the 21-year-old, though Goal are reporting that neither side are prepared to make a move for Havertz this summer amidst the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Those reports have left Chelsea in ‘pole position’ to sign the star should they meet Leverkusen’s £90m asking price, with the west London side in a financial position of strength after a transfer-ban last summer and the substantial fees received from the sales of Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata.
Frank Lampard’s side has already completed high-profile deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, and could now launch a move for Havertz – provided the club secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Leverkusen have failed to qualify for next season’s competition but Havertz will want assurances of his place amongst Europe’s finest should he depart the Bay Arena this summer, Chelsea currently third in the Premier League following last night’s victory at Crystal Palace.
The arrival of Havertz would be the latest exciting addition to head to Stamford Bridge as the Blues strengthen their options ahead of next season, whilst the club will be keen to capitalise on the current uncertainty in the transfer market for several of their rivals.
Lampard is also believed to be keen to sign a new first-choice left-back with a move for Leicester’s Ben Chilwell muted, with West Ham’s Declan Rice also reportedly amongst the club’s transfer targets.
