Chelsea ‘fighting for Europe’ following five-star win at West Ham

Chelsea have their eyes on a spot in Europe next season after demolishing West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Blues scored five without reply against the hapless Hammers, with Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher and Noni Madueke all finding the target in the first half.

Nicolas Jackson has struggled in front of goal for much of the season, but the Senegalese striker grabbed a brace after the break to complete the rout.

“It was very positive from the team and we fought hard for the clean sheet too,” Jackson told Premier League Productions after the final whistle.

“We want to fight to go to Europe and we did it as a team today. We fought together to win the game.”

The result leaves Chelsea seventh in the Premier League table, which would be enough to qualify for the Uefa Europa Conference League next season. They are level on points with Manchester United, who play on Monday night, and two adrift of sixth-placed Newcastle.

“The chips fall how they are meant to fall,” Madueke told BBC Match of the Day.

“We will do our best to finish as high as possible to try and qualify for Europe. We know what we can do now and next season we can put everything into it.

“When you play for one of the biggest clubs in the world you have to be in Europe. It has been disappointing this season but we have to go and get it next season.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is not getting ahead of himself after a challenging campaign, preferring to focus on the side’s next game.

“We need to keep this momentum and belief going,” he told Sky Sports. “We are going to rest tomorrow and Tuesday we will prepare for Nottingham Forest. It’s step by step but most important is the mentality.”
