Chelsea have signed many players from Brighton over the years, but it’s fair to say that no one would have seen the latest transfer link between the two clubs coming.

The Blues are “exploring a move” to sign Danny Welbeck from the Seagulls, according to The Athletic.

Brighton are “aware” of Chelsea’s interest in the England international, who has 12 months remaining on his current contract.

Although things are at an “early stage”, there is “optimism on all sides” that a deal can be completed in the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed that new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso appreciates his quality and leadership. The club have explicitly set out to sign more experienced players after years of acquiring young talents.

Welbeck enjoyed his best season in front of goal last season, scoring 13 times in 37 Premier League appearances.

But what does this mean for the strikers that Chelsea already own? The report adds that they will “listen to offers” for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emgeha, while Marc Guiu could leave on loan or permanently.

Nicolas Jackson has been linked with a move to Aston Villa after returning from his season-long loan at Bayern Munich. The Senegalese forward was not included in the pre-season tour squad that went to Australia last week.
