Chelsea and Manchester City are keeping a keen eye on the development of Florian Wirtz after the midfielder’s brilliant start to the season at Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz has reestablished his status as one of Europe’s brightest talents during an impressive start to the campaign, having missed much of the last two seasons with an ACL injury.
The 20-year-old has scored four goals and provided eight assists in 13 appearances during the current campaign, for a Leverkusen team who are unbeaten and top of the Bundesliga table.
The Express are reporting that Chelsea and Manchester City are monitoring the German ahead of a potential move, while Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle have all scouted Wirtz this season.
Chelsea are reportedly ‘further down the line’ in their interest as the west Londoners continue to focus on signing emerging talent. The Blues have a strong working relationship with Leverkusen after deals for Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi between the clubs in recent transfer windows.
Wirtz broke Havertz’s record as Leverkusen’s youngest player when making his debut for the side, aged 17. He has since made 116 appearances in all competitions and has won 12 caps for Germany at senior level.
Leverkusen are understood to be open to Wirtz leaving at the end of the season, provided interested clubs meet what is expected to be a club record sale asking price.
