Jack Grealish is almost ‘certain’ to leave Aston Villa this summer and could emerge as a potential target for league leaders Liverpool, according to Kevin Phillips.
Grealish has starred since Aston Villa‘s return to the Premier League this season and has been linked with a big-money move away from the club in recent months, the midfielder having scored nine goals and provided a further eight assists so far this season.
Dean Smith’s side currently sit in the division’s bottom three and face a battle to survive the drop, though former Villa and Sunderland forward Phillips believes Grealish’s exit is inevitable if the club fail to retain their top-flight status.
Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move to sign the 24-year-old as they seek additional midfield creativity, however, Phillips has backed Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to also emerge as contenders for the Villa captain this summer.
“Liverpool are at a point where they can splash out on the world’s best,” Phillips told Football insider.
“Those world’s best players want to come and play for Liverpool and Klopp. He plays a certain style and he will not buy someone unless it plays his system.
“The obvious one is Jack Grealish. If Villa go down I am certain he will move on. Could he play for Liverpool? He is the only one out of the bottom three or four teams that could fit in that team.
“They will certainly be targeting players from top abroad teams and around the world.”
