Cavani has ‘agreement in principle’ for La Liga switch following Man Utd exit

Edinson Cavani has an ‘agreement in principle’ to join Villarreal following his exit from Manchester United.

Cavani is closing in on a free transfer move to La Liga after leaving the Red Devils this summer, with the forward keen to secure regular first-team football ahead of the World Cup in November.

The 35-year-old endured an injury-hit final season in the Premier League in which he made just seven league starts and Cavani will be looking to gain fitness and momentum ahead of Qatar.

Marca are reporting that the Uruguay international has agreed to join Villarreal, but the Spanish side are looking to move on Paco Alcácer before finalising the deal. Alcácer is currently training away from the first-team squad, with Celta Vigo interested in signing the 28-year-old.

Cavani’s move to Villarreal will see the forward reunite with former PSG manager Unai Emery. The duo won a domestic treble together in France during the 2017/18 season with Cavani scoring 40 goals in all competitions.

Fenerbahce had expressed an interest in signing Cavani, but he now looks set to move to Spain after productive talks with Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine – who reached the Champions League semi-finals last season – will compete in the Europa Conference League next season after finishing seventh in La Liga in 2021/22.
