Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool would be the ‘perfect destination’ for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe ahead of an inevitable move to Real Madrid.
Mbappe has established himself as arguably the world’s most exciting talent in recent seasons and has starred for both club and country, winning the World Cup with France in 2018 and becoming the first teenager since Pele to score in the final.
The forward’s performances have been similarly impressive at club level with four league titles and over a century of goals since signing for PSG, including a breathtaking hat-trick as the French champions thrashed Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek.
Mbappe insists he remains happy with the Parisians but his future has been a continued source of speculation, the 22-year-old approaching the final year of his contract with rumours over a potential mega-money move.
Real Madrid have long been suggested as a future destination with Mbappe having held a long-held ambition to represent the Spanish giants, though the concerning financial situation at the Bernabeu makes an imminent move appear unlikely.
That situation could open up the possibility of a Premier League move with Liverpool linked, whilst the Frenchman has added fuel to the fire with a number of complimentary comments about the Merseyside club.
Carragher believes a switch to Anfield could be the ‘perfect destination’ for the star and has revealed why he believes a move to the Premier League could become an eventuality.
‘I’m not joking, it was based on the fact that Liverpool thought they had a decent chance of getting Mbappe when he was at Monaco.’ Carragher told CBS Sports.
‘I know Jurgen Klopp had spoken to him then and I’m sure other clubs had at that time.
‘When Liverpool were in the Champions League final and won the Champions League a couple of years ago, I think anyone watching Liverpool there with Jurgen Klopp and the support of Anfield, if you’re ever gonna go to a club in England before you go to Real Madrid…
‘Because I think he will, guaranteed, play for Real Madrid at some stage in his career but I’d always feel that maybe Liverpool is that perfect destination for a player like that before you make that next step.’
Carragher added that he believes only his former side or Manchester City could secure his signing, and believes Mbappe’s praise for the Reds could open the door for the move to Merseyside.
‘It would be Liverpool or Manchester City because they are the two top teams you’d see in the Premier League,’ he continued.
But there’s no doubt on social media, he’s put a couple of things out when Liverpool have been playing at home in the Champions League and it’s got us all a little bit excited.’
