Rafael Benitez says he is ‘proud’ of his Newcastle side after they ended the season with a 4-0 win at Fulham.
Goals from Jonjo Shelvey, Ayoze Perez, Fabian Schar and Salomon Rondon sealed a comprehensive win at Craven Cottage, with Newcastle leapfrogging Bournemouth on the final day to finish 13th in the Premier League.
“It was a great game. The early goal helped us a bit when they were pressing,” Benitez told the BBC.
”We had the experience on the counter attack. The third goal killed the game. Credit to them because they were pushing then.
“I am really proud of this group of players and the fans were amazing as well. “Finish 13th is important for everyone. It is a good position and I am really pleased.
“Now is the time to enjoy and the fans go back happy. I am really proud. This group of players, even in bad times, never had their heads down they were still believing and working hard.”
Benitez though remained coy when pushed about his own future, with the Spaniard’s contract about to expire and no agreement having been reached on a new deal.
“I said before that I have seen the potential but now is the time to enjoy.”
During his appearance on our Podcast this week, we asked Chris Waddle who was the most over rated player you played against?
We all nearly fell off our chairs when he gave his answer… ???? pic.twitter.com/nWEkCacpCS
