Barcelona presidential favourite, Victor Font, is pushing for the return of Pep Guardiola as manager as he bids to bring success back to the Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s board of directors and current president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, resigned earlier this week following a turbulent period for the Spanish giants in which they have seen their fortunes falter both on and off the pitch.
The Catalans ended last season without a trophy for the first time in more than a decade and have seen their finances worsen due to irresponsible spending and poor recruitment, whilst their inability to compete on the Champions League stage has also drawn fierce criticism.
Second leg capitulations to Roma and Liverpool in recent seasons were followed by a humiliating 8-2 defeat to eventual champions Bayern Munich in last season’s quarter-finals, Barca’s decline leading to Lionel Messi pushing for an exit during the summer.
According to Sky Sports, presidential favourite, Font, is keen or the return of Guardiola should he assume control at the Camp Nou, reuniting the most successful manager in the club’s history with Messi.
Guardiola has entered the final months of his contract at Manchester City and is yet to commit his future to the Premier League side beyond the end of the season, raising the possibility of a stunning return to Barcelona.
The Spaniard won a staggering 14 trophies – including three league titles and the Champions League twice – during a four-year spell at the club previously, before walking away to take a sabbatical from the game in 2012.
He later moved to Bayern Munich and won three Bundesliga titles in Germany, before twice guiding City to the Premier League since moving to English football.
