Atletico Madrid are keen to tie Thomas Partey to a new deal amid interest in the midfielder from Arsenal.
Arsenal have registered an interest in signing the Ghana international as the club seek to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season, with the Atletico Madrid star available for a fee of €50m (£43.6m) due to a release clause in his current contract.
Despite the current financial uncertainty in football due to the coronavirus crisis, Partey’s release clause makes the midfielder both attainable and good value as the Gunners consider their options in the market.
The 26-year-old has established himself as a key figure for Diego Simeone’s side during five seasons in the first-team in the Spanish capital, with his athleticism and combative approach having seen Partey emerge as a primary transfer target for Mikel Arteta, with the Guardian reporting that Arsenal have made contact with the players agent.
However, the report adds Atletico are keen to fend off the interest from north London and are will offer Partey fresh terms over a new deal, their offer set to double the midfielder’s reported £65,000-a-week wages and raise his release clause to a fee of more than €100m (£87.2m).
Partey currently has three years remaining on his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano and it remains uncertain as to whether the midfielder will agree new terms or decide on a new challenge in the Premier League.
