Aston Villa vs Fenerbahçe – Predicted lineup and team news

Aston Villa host Fenerbahçe at Villa Park on Wednesday in the Champions League, looking for a second successive league-phase win.

Aston Villa host Fenerbahçe at Villa Park on Wednesday in the Champions League, looking for a second successive league-phase win.

Unai Emery’s side beat Club Brugge 3-2 on matchday one with all three goals in the first half, but they have not won at home this season and are 16th in the Premier League on five points after drawing 2-2 with Brentford on Saturday. Emery has said Villa must play better football at Villa Park, which hosts its first Champions League tie since April 2025.

Fenerbahçe, who drew 1-1 with Roma on matchday one, have lost all three previous meetings with Villa, the latest 1-0 in Istanbul in January. Villa are unbeaten in their last 13 home European matches.

Aston Villa team news

Matteo Ruggeri will be out for more than a month after being forced off against Brentford, and Emery said the club must find solutions at left-back because Ian Maatsen is not yet available. Maatsen (ankle) is improving and, Emery said, should rejoin the group in a few days or a week.

George Hemmings is unavailable with a small pain, though Emery said he could return on Saturday, and Amadou Onana (anterior cruciate ligament) remains out. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Brian Madjo cannot play in the Champions League, with Madjo hoped to join the group for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle.

Leon Goretzka, who has not played since signing in the summer, is in the squad, and Modou Keba Cisse has started training. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the likeliest option at left-back in Ruggeri’s absence. Nicolas Jackson is set to lead the line, with Emery saying Villa must adapt to his speed and power and share that speed through players such as Ibrahim Mbaye, Alejandro Garnacho and Alysson. John McGinn is expected to feature in a wide role and Emiliano Buendia in the XI.
