Ashley Cole admits he would ‘love’ to see Chelsea sign Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell.
The England international has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea in recent months as Frank Lampard looks to strengthen his defensive options, with the speculation having further intensified following the lifting of the club’s transfer-ban ahead of the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old has shone in Leicester‘s surprise emergence into title contention, whilst he has also established himself as a first-choice in Gareth Southgate’s England side in recent months.
Chelsea manager Lampard is believed to have identified left-back as a priority position to strengthen ahead of the winter window, and former Blues full-back Cole believes Chilwell would be a signing of the highest quality.
“He (Chilwell) is doing really well in terms of how he’s playing at Leicester,” Cole said, as per the Mail. “He’s enjoying the way Brendan [Rodgers] plays and the system. He’s got that licence to attack.
“I would love to see him here. I think he’s a quality player. I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan. But it depends on whether he wants to leave Leicester or if they’ll sell him. But in terms of quality, he’s got that.
“If you buy a player you’ve got another three here you need to keep happy or sell. It’s a big decision, but quality-wise, for sure he is good enough.
“When he’s played for England he’s played well. He got three assists last month. He’s shown quality both on the ball and off it. You can tell he likes to defend.”
