Arsenal vs Everton – Premier League Match Preview

Arsenal head into the final weekend with hopes of winning a first Premier League title in two decades.

The Gunners host Everton at the Emirates and need a slip-up from Manchester City to be crowned champions, though will want to ensure they are not left with any regrets.

Here is all you need to know about Sunday’s clash.

Arsenal could hardly have done more to earn a drought-breaking league title with one defeat in 17 Premier League games in 2024. A run of five consecutive wins since that setback against Aston Villa has kept the pressure on Manchester City, though the North Londoners need the leaders to falter on the final weekend to be crowned champions.

Arsenal’s title challenge has been built on the division’s best defence with just 28 goals conceded and the club’s goal difference (+61) is also the highest in the Premier League.

Bukayo Saka came off in the win at Manchester United last weekend but Mikel Arteta has said the winger should be ‘fine’ to feature. The 1-0 win at Old Trafford saw Arsenal claim their 27th win of the Premier League season, their highest number of victories in a single campaign, eclipsing the 2003/04 Invincibles (26).

Everton: WWWDW

Everton have bounced back from a 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea last month to find form and secure their Premier League status.

The Toffees have won four of their last five games in the Premier League, including a long-awaited Merseyside Derby win over Liverpool at Goodison Park, and have conceded just one goal during that run.

Sean Dyche’s side has proven to be stubborn opposition and boasts the fourth-best defensive record in the division. Jordan Pickford has 13 clean sheets in the Premier League in 2023/24 and only this weekend’s opposite number, David Raya, has more (16).

A win for Everton would confirm a 15th-place finish in the Premier League this season, their highest since 2020/21 despite an eight-point deduction for financial breaches.

This weekend’s game will also see the Premier League’s best set-piece teams go head-to-head. Only Arsenal (20) have scored more set-piece goals than Everton (18) excluding penalties this season.

Last Meeting

Everton 0-1 Arsenal, Premier League, September 17th 2023

Arsenal have won three of the last four meetings between the teams including a 1-0 win at Goodison Park in September. The Gunners had lost four of their previous five visits to Everton but ended that run courtesy of Leandro Trossard’s goal on 69 minutes.

Mikel Arteta made headlines pre-game with the decision to bring in David Raya for Aaron Ramsdale in goal and the Spanish shot-stopper responded with a clean sheet on debut.

In the last two games between the sides in North London, Arsenal have scored nine goals.
