DC United are eyeing a move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil as a replacement for Wayne Rooney.
Former England captain Rooney is set to leave the MLS side in January, with the 33-year-old returning to England to join Championship side Derby County in a player-coach role.
Rooney has been a major success since moving to the US, scoring 25 goals in 45 appearances, and the club are keen to secure another big-name to replace their outgoing captain.
The 30-year-old has struggled to produce his best form on a consistent basis in recent years, and Unai Emery is believed to be willing to sanction the sale of the former Germany international.
Ozil is currently Arsenal’s highest-paid player on a huge £350,000-a-week, a salary which has so far proven a stumbling block for potential suitors.
According to the report, DC United are also considering former Manchester City and Liverpool forward Mario Balotelli as an alternative, with the club keen to secure the signing of their new marquee addition before the MLS season begins in March.
