Arsenal will target the signing of a creative midfielder during the January transfer window with the club’s hierarchy ‘unequivocally’ behind Mikel Arteta.
The north London side’s 2-1 defeat to Everton stretched their wretched recent record to seven games without a win in the Premier League, with the Gunners now just four points above the relegation places following an alarming run of form.
Arteta’s side have won just four of their opening 14 league fixtures and extended their worst ever start to a Premier League season with defeat on Merseyside, and according to the Mail, the club’s board are now prepared to back the under-fire manager in a bid to arrest their faltering fortunes.
Heading the list of priorities is the signing of a creative midfielder with Arsenal having struggled to create opportunities during the current campaign, scoring just 12 Premier League goals so far this season.
Red Bull Salzburg’s Dominik Szoboszlai had been linked with a move to the Emirates but has agreed a deal to sign for RB Leipzig when the transfer window opens next month, whilst Lyon’s Houssem Aouar has also been speculated as a potential target.
Arteta made a promising start to his reign with the Gunners and guided the club to FA Cup success last season, though he has failed to build on that initial progress and has seen his position come under increasing scrutiny.
Despite the growing concerns that the club could be dragged into a relegation battle, the report says Arsenal remain ‘unequivocally’ behind the under-fire Spaniard and will provide funds to strengthen in the winter window.
Arsenal face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in midweek before hosting Chelsea in a huge clash at the Emirates on Boxing Day.
