Emery ‘hopeful’ of Lacazette’s fitness ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener

Unai Emery is hopeful that Alexandre Lacazette will be fit for Arsenal’s Premier League opener at Newcastle this weekend.

Lacazette suffered an ankle injury in Arsenal‘s Emirates Cup defeat to Lyon last weekend, with the forward missing the club’s friendly clash with Barcelona on Sunday.

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to face Steve Bruce’s Newcastle, but Emery says the club’s medical staff are ‘optimistic’ that the French forward will be passed fit to play.

“Hopefully he could be available for the match against Newcastle,” Emery told following the 2-1 pre-season defeat to Barcelona.

“The doctors, they are optimistic. We are going to wait. The next days are going to be very important to see how he is going to progress with his injury.

“But I am really, really happy with other players also. If he is ready for Sunday, perfect. If he isn’t, then for the next.

“We need now to have a very competitive team, with the players ready forth next matches but above all to create a mentality to start strong and find our best performance in the next match.”
