Arsenal are being linked with a number of central defenders as they look to cover the injury suffered by Calum Chambers.
The Gunners have endured a difficult campaign so far this season, especially at the back, their 2-0 win over Manchester United on New Years Day just the fourth time they have kept a clean sheet in the Premier League this season.
However, Arsenal‘s defensive problems were worsened when Calum Chambers suffered a season-ending ruptured ACL during their 2-1 loss to Chelsea at the weekend, leaving just Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis as their fit senior centre-backs.
A central midfielder was thought to be Mikel Arteta’s priority coming into the January window, though the Spaniard suggested that Chambers’ injury could have altered his ideas, and according to The Telegraph, the North London club will enter the ‘tug of war’ for Nathan Ake this month.
The Netherlands international has impressed since moving to Bournemouth in 2017, and has been linked with a return to Chelsea who are believed to have first refusal, though there appears to be a queue building for the ยฃ45 million rated defender.
RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano has already been linked with a move to the Emirates, while the report also claims that Juventus’ Daniele Rugani could be a ‘cheaper option’.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports Germany reckon that the Gunners have ‘not ruled out’ a move for Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng, the Germany international said to be considering his future with the Bavarian side after starting just eight Bundesliga games this season.
