Arsenal clear-out continues as defender nears Lazio move

Arsenal’s clear-out in the summer transfer window is set to continue with Nuno Tavares nearing a move to Lazio.

Arsenal have accepted a loan offer with a mandatory purchase option in the region of โ‚ฌ8m (ยฃ6.7m) for the left-back, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Marseille and Nottingham Forest respectively. The 24-year-old struggled to make an impact at the City Ground last season with just five starts for Forest in the Premier League.

However, Lazio are prepared to offer the defender a route out of the Emirates and have reached an agreement to sign Tavares on loan with an obligation to make the move permanent. Arsenal have included a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Tavares signed for Arsenal from Benfica for a fee of ยฃ8m in 2021 and made 21 league appearances in his debut campaign before falling out of favour.

The Gunners are prepared to sanction his sale due to strong cover at left-back, where Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all options, alongside the impending arrival of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Tavares’ exit continues a clear-out for Mikel Arteta following the releases of Cedric Soares and Mohamed Elneny.
