Arsenal have been handed a potential boost in their interest in Julián Alvarez after Barcelona reportedly ruled out a January move for the Atletico Madrid forward.
The Argentina international was one of the major transfer stories of the summer, with both Barcelona and Arsenal exploring a deal before he ultimately remained at Atletico. The Spanish club resisted attempts to sell him, while Alvarez stayed in Madrid after the transfer window closed.
A report in Fichajes now claims Barcelona have decided against pursuing the 26-year-old in January. That would potentially leave Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain as the clubs to watch should Alvarez’s future come under renewed scrutiny during the winter window.
Arsenal’s interest is not new. The Gunners were strongly linked with Alvarez during the summer and were reportedly prepared to make a substantial financial commitment to bring him to the Emirates. However, no deal materialised before the deadline.
Barcelona rule out Alvarez signing from Atletico Madrid
Barcelona’s position has also been complicated by their summer recruitment. The Catalan club brought in Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal and have subsequently indicated that they do not currently see signing another centre-forward as a priority. Sporting director Deco said the club already have several options capable of playing through the middle, including Raphinha and Jesus.
That could leave Arsenal with an opportunity if they decide to revive their interest.
Alvarez remains under contract at Atletico until 2030, meaning any move would still depend on the Spanish club’s willingness to negotiate. Atletico spent the summer resisting Barcelona’s attempts to sign him and ultimately kept the forward at the Metropolitano.
For now, there is no confirmed Arsenal bid or agreement for Alvarez. His immediate future remains with Atletico, but Barcelona’s reported decision not to pursue him could remove one of the major obstacles for clubs interested in testing Atletico’s resolve in January.
