Argentina vs Austria – Predicted lineup and team news

Argentina head into Monday’s Group J fixture against Austria with qualification firmly in their sights.

The defending champions carry enormous momentum after a dominant opening victory over Algeria, with Lionel Messi delivering a hat-trick that drew him level with Miroslav Klose as the joint all-time leading scorer in World Cup history on 16 goals.

Scaloni’s side are brimming with confidence, but will need to maintain their focus against a well-organised Austria side that know how to press and cause problems. Three points at AT&T Stadium in Arlington would seal their place in the round of 32 with a game to spare.

Argentina team news

Scaloni is expected to build his tactical shape entirely around his iconic captain once again. Emiliano Martinez is the undisputed starter in goal. Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez continue their central defensive partnership, offering the ideal blend of aggression and defensive quality. Facundo Medina holds his place on the left side of defence.

The one fitness concern is right-back Gonzalo Montiel, who faces a late test on a hamstring issue. Nahuel Molina is ready to deputise if Montiel does not come through. In midfield, Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis Mac Allister provide the industry and pressing intensity, with Enzo Fernandez dictating from a deeper role and Thiago Almada offering the creative spark ahead of him. Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez form the attacking partnership.
