Ajax hijack West Ham deal for Manchester City teenager

Ajax have hijacked West Ham’s move to sign Manchester City teenager Carlos Borges, with the winger now set to sign for the Dutch side.

Borges had looked set to sign for West Ham in search of regular senior football with the club having agreed a £14m fee with Manchester City, but Ajax’s late move has prompted a rethink from Borges who is now finalising a transfer to the Eredivisie.

The 19-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs after a prolific season for City’s EDS side, with the Portuguese winger named as the Premier League 2 Player of the Season after leading the league for goals in 2022/23. Borges scored 21 goals in just 24 appearances as City’s EDS side secured a third consecutive PL2 title.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Borges has completed medical tests in Amsterdam ahead of his move to Ajax, who will pay a fee of £17m to sign the teenager.

City will include a buy-back option and sell-on clause in the deal, which is expected to be announced imminently.

The news will come as a significant blow to West Ham who are yet to make a signing so far this summer, despite the £105m sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal.
