Paris Saint-Germain will face AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League’s play-off round this evening.
The French rivals meet in European competition for the first time, while it’s only the third all-Ligue 1 knockout tie in Champions League history.
The first saw Lyon beat Bordeaux in the 2009-10 quarter-finals, while last season, PSG thrashed Brest 10-0 over two legs. That convincing win is the biggest-ever winning margin in a two-legged tie between teams from the same country.
In total, there have been 27 two-legged Champions League knockout ties involving teams from the same country. English clashes have been the most common, with 10, followed by all-Spanish ties (8).
There have been three different same city knockout ties, with Inter Milan and AC Milan facing off on three occasions, and three two-legged ties between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
The 2003-04 quarter-final between Chelsea and Arsenal provided the first-ever London derby in the Champions League.
