Spain midfielder shuts down Manchester City transfer talk

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has shut down talk over a potential move to Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The Citizens have been linked with signing the 25-year-old following Rodri’s season-ending ACL injury. Zubimendi is an international teammate of Rodri’s with Spain and formed part of the squad that won Euro 2024 under Luis de la Fuente in the summer.

He was subject of interest from Liverpool in the summer, with the Reds informing Sociedad of their intention to activate Zubimendi’s €60m (£50.2m) release clause.

However, the midfielder snubbed a switch to the Premier League in favour of remaining in the Basque Country and little has changed on that stance.

Sociedad saw Robin Le Normand and Mikel Merino depart for new challenges in the summer but were handed a boost when Zubimendi – a boyhood fan of the club – opted to remain at the Reale Arena.

When asked on a potential move to Manchester City in the January window, Zubimendi reemphasised how he believes Sociedad is the ‘best solution’ for him at this stage of his career.

“There are always rumours but so far I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad,” Zubimendi said in comments published by Fabrizio Romano.

“I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here.”
